Weight Loss Surgery Options
Weight loss surgery options can be broken down into two different types of procedures: malabsorption and restriction.
Malabsorption – Duodenal Switch & Roux-en Y
Malabsorption procedures change the way your body absorbs calories and nutrients from food. The surgeon does this by altering the route in which food passes through the large portion of the stomach and a portion of the small intestine; by doing this, many of the calories and nutrients pass through without being absorbed.
Restriction – Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
Restriction procedures alter the physical size of the stomach and restrict the amount of food you can ingest. The surgeon creates a small pouch in the stomach; this pouch then fills up with food faster, making you feel full and satisfied more quickly. Because you feel full faster, you eat less, thus taking in less food.
